Emma Evelyn Smith (Evelyn) was born March 8, 1926 in St. Paul, MN to Rev. J. Able and Maymie (Anderson) Bloom. She died Sunday, September 23, 2012 in Pine City, MN of a traumatic brain injury at the age of 86. She is survived by her loving husband Harold Wayne Smith of Pine City. Wayne and Evelyn married in Minneapolis, MN July 10, 1982. They just celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Evelyn graduated from Grantsburg High School in 1944 and from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls and later received her Masters of Arts degree in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. She also attended North Park College in Chicago, Illinois. Her work history included grade school teacher in Hector, MN, Red Wing, MN and Teacher/Librarian in the Hopkins, MN school district for 29 years retiring in 1989. Evelyn’s church affiliations were very important to her and include: Wood Lake-Freya Covenant (now Calvary) in Grantsburg, WI, Red Wing Covenant Church in Red Wing, MN; Bethany Covenant Church, Chicago, ILL; Detroit Covenant Church, Detroit, MI; Trade River Ev. Free Church, Grantsburg, WI; Crosstown Covenant Church, Minneapolis, MN (30 years); and most recently was blessed to work and worship with the parish of Pine City Evangelical Free Church in Pine City, MN.
Evelyn loved to sew and create stuffed animals. She very much enjoyed photographing barns in the region and going for long drives in the country with her husband Wayne.
She volunteered at church…helping with the weekly bulletins. She became the church librarian and organized and itemized the church library. She had an exceptional gift for organizing information.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Wayne and his children whom she loved as her very own: Ronald Smith and his wife Wanda of Keller, Texas, Phyllis Smith of Stillwater, Minnesota, Rebecca Rehfeld of Minnetonka, Minnesota, grandchildren Erik Smith and his wife Theresa of Spokane, Washington, Victoria Smith of Keller, Texas, and great grandchildren Brandon, Boston, and Benjamin Smith. She is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 28, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at the Pine City Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Joel Preston officiating. Music was provided by Adrienne Roubinek and Rebecca Rehfeld. Casketbearers were: Jim Ware, Bob Yerke, David Gurney, John Engh, Lonnie Johnson and Steve Roubinek. Interment was in the Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City.
Funeral arrangements were with the Swanson Funeral Chapel of Pine City.
The family would like to thank all of the caregivers at LakeSide for the loving care Evelyn received while in their care as well as all of the members of Pine City Ev. Free Church as they have kept Evelyn and Harold in their prayers and so many gracious gifts of food and transportation.
