Edna Hauger of Pine City, formerly of Roseville, passed away at the Lakeside Nursing Home in Pine City on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the age of 91.
Edna Gladys (Sward) Hauger was born on November 14, 1924 to Edward and Anna (Piel) Sward in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The doctor put December 14 on the birth certificate when it was filed. Edna’s mom was mad at the doctor but it was never changed and her birthday was always celebrated in November.
Edna and Archie were married on May 22, 1943 and were married 44 years before Archie passed away.
She was a stay at home mom; making all of her great food from scratch and was also a fantastic baker. Edna was a great mom but would also discipline when needed. She was very active in church teaching sunday school, working on quilts made by the women’s group of the church and many, many other services. Volunteering was in her blood. She volunteered at the food bank, meals on wheels and helping out wherever needed. Edna was given the Pine County outstanding senior citizen award in 2003. When her children were older she worked part-time at Mr. Donut. A few years later after her children were no longer living at home she started working full-time at Midway Hospital in Saint Paul and worked there until she retired.
In the 1970’s, Edna and Archie moved from Roseville to a lake home in Pine City on Cross Lake where they lived and provided a great weekend lake place for their children and grand-children for many happy years. She sold the lake home after Archie’s death and moved to a small house in Pine City. She eventually sold that home and moved to Westchester Apartments where she lived until she was moved to Lakeside Nursing Home where she stayed until her death.
She was loved by everyone she met all her life and was a “Grandma” to all regardless of their relationship to her.
Edna is survived by her children Connie Matthews of Bolivar, Ohio, Nancy Burger and her husband Mark of Moundsview, Brian Hauger of Brook Park, 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson; sister June LaBarre of Maplewood, and daughter-in-law Karen Friez-Hauger of Dalbo.
She is preceded in death by her parents Edward and Anna Sward, husband Archie Hauger, son Keith (Char) Hauger, brother Raymond (Mary) Sward.
Rev. Dr. Vicki VanderVegt will officiate a celebration of Edna's life; 2:00 PM Saturday, (4/30/16) with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service; all at the Swanson Chapel in Pine City. Music will be provided by Wyatt Frietag.
The interment will take place at a later date in the Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City.
