James "Jim" E. Barnes

James E. “Jim” Barnes, was born on March 27th, 1929 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Roman & Margret (Grace) Barnes. Jim graduated from St. Paul Central High School and continued his education with a four year degree from the University of Minnesota. From 1950-1952, Jim was in the United States Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Corporal during his time in the armed forces. Jim married Penny Kaye at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Paul, and to this union four children were born. Jim worked for the St. Paul Police Department for 20 years and also worked for Brown & Bigelow. He was a State Fair Lieutenant Commander for 20-some years and also enjoyed coaching baseball and football for St. Paul Como Rec. Jim passed away early Monday, January 4th, at his home on Cross Lake in Pine City. He was 80 years old. Jim is survived by wife Penny; children: Mary Pat (Mike) Cheney of Shoreview, Kathleen Barnes of Pine City, Tom (Darcy) Barnes of Pine City, and Mike (Theresa) Barnes of River Falls, WI; grandchildren: Chris, Pat, Megan, Julie, Jeff, Josh, James, Bobby, Molly, Laura, and Kate; great grandchildren: Jared, Jordan & Desirae; 2 sisters Rita Barnes & Bunny Lind of Texas; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Roman & Margret, and nephew Jimmy Dranginnis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 7th at the Immaculate Conception Church in Pine City with Father Lourdes presiding. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City. Interment will be at Birchwood Cemetery in Pine City. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s School or the Pine City Food Shelf. Arrangements are with the Swanson Funeral Chapel of Pine City.
