Barbara Ann Buckner

March 29, 1919 — August 29, 2010

Barb was the first child of Frank and Mary (Cassellius) Jackelen born March 29, 1919 in Glenwood City, WI. Lawrence, Celia, Francis, Bernard, Ralph, and Valentine completed the Jackelen family that lived in a simple farm house amid the rolling hills near Glenwood City, Wisconsin. As a young girl, Barb attended Camp Nine – a one room school house near their home. One of Barb’s first jobs away from home was in Hudson, Wisconsin where she lived and worked on the farm of Mort and Grace (Buckner) Melby. Barb met George Buckner who often worked and visited at the home of his sister. While on a date with George at a movie house, he proposed to Barb, Barb who was sixteen at the time. She declined. Later Barb also lived and worked in Chicago with her sister Celia as nursing aids with her Aunts and Cousins who were nursing Sisters of St. Francis. Later, she worked in the rail road yards of Superior, Wisconsin during World War !!. She met Lottie and Floss who turned out to be lifelong friends. Later, while at a dance place near Glenwood City, Barb met up again with George. It was now some 13 years later, and again George proposed to Barb. She accepted. Barb and George were married at the rectory of St. John’s Catholic Church on September 3, 1949. They had eight children, Bob, Margaret, Mona, Greg, Geri, John, Lucy and Grace being the last child born in 1964. George retired in 1973 and with the two youngest, Lucy and Grace, moved to the home place of Barb’s parents. They lived there until George’s death in 1981. Barb moved to St. Paul and lived with four of her daughters; visiting the home place during the summers for a couple of years. Barb and daughters Ramona and Geri vacationed during summer months at Pokegema Lake RV Park. Barb and Geri decided to make Pine City a permanent home in 1996. In Barb’s last couple of years, Geri cared for Barb in her home in Pine City. Barb died peacefully in her home August 29, 2010 as she had wished. All that knew Barb will truly miss the love and kindness she shared, a gift of God’s Love to all of us.
