Adeline Betty Engelby (VanHorn) of Pine City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 in the presence of her children.
Adeline was born on August 24, 1934 to Augustina and Frank VanHorn in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As a young woman, Adeline was called to the nursing profession. With her strong compassion and caring for others, she embodied this role throughout her long life. She traveled to Mexico to watch the bulls run, cruised the Mississippi River and Great Lakes, her ancestral homeland of The Czech Republic, Alaska and the Holy Lands.
In her mid-20’s she met the love of her life and future husband, Marvin Embert Engelby. They married on June 6, 1959 at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. Together, Marvin and Adeline raised six children.
Adeline had a strong Christian faith. She loved to garden and had a green thumb that could make the smallest plant clipping or root take life. Many of her flowers live on in the gardens of her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her soft voice, patient heart and gentle touch.
She is survived by her children Elliott Engelby of Ash Fork, Arizona, Everett (Tanya) Engelby of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Esther Rosenthal of Pine City, Elizabeth (David) Miller of Romeo, Michigan, Eunice (Jerry) Miller of Pine City, 19 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin; daughter Evelyn; sisters Mary VanHorn, Frances Soukup, May Vondrasek, Augustina Workman; brothers Valerina “Val,” VanHorn, George VanHorn, Paul VanHorn.
Much gratitude to the caring and compassionate staff of Timber Pines, Welia Health, Sandstone Health Care Center, and St. Croix Hospice.
