Darrel Raymond Swenson

March 8, 1938 — November 30, 2018

Darrel Swenson of Rush City passed away at Bickford Assisted Living in North Branch November 30, 2018 at the age of 80.

Darrel Raymond Swenson was born March 8,1938 to Arthur and Mabel (Johnson) Swenson on the family farm south of Rush City. He grew up on farm attending Willow Grove Country Country School. He went on to graduate from Rush City High School, Class of 1956.

Following graduation Darrel farmed with his dad until 1961 when he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty he joined the Army Reserves, then the Army National Guard retiring in 1998 as Staff Sergeant. His time in the military was important to him, he respected his fellow veterans and was especially proud of his five uncles who served our country in WWII.

Darrel and his dad farmed together until 1969 when the farm was sold and they moved to Rush City. He worked for United Sprinkler and ended his working career retiring in 1996 after 18 years as custodian at North Branch Schools.

After retirement Darrel had time to pursue his musical talent. He played his guitar with family and friends sharing their music at area nursing homes, senior dining sites and community events.

Darrel led a quiet, simple life, had a strong work ethic and deep devotion to family. He cared for his folks in their home for many years until skilled nursing care was needed.

Due to failing health he moved to (Gracewood) Bickford Assisted Living in North Branch in 2014 where he won the hearts of his caregivers with him smile, humor, teasing and whistling. Thank you to their staff and the St. Croix Hospice team for their tender loving care.

Darrel is survived by his aunt Helen Johnson of Mora; cousins, spouses and their families: caregiver-Candy (Harley) Twingstrom of Harris, Karen (Tom) Ploog of Las Vegas, NV., Shirley Evenson of Siren, WI., Pat Morrison of Stillwater, Betty Kosik of St. Michael, Jerry Caroon of Forest Lake, Rick Johnson of Grand Portage, Dennis Johnson of Superior, WI., Nancy Peterson of Mora, Helen Johnson and Janice Johnson both of St. Paul, Jeannie Adelman of St. Paul, Randy Johnson of Oakdale, Veda Huberty and Janet Ward both of St. Paul, Carol Vanek of Hibbing, Barb Carter of Livermore, CA., Janis Krueger of San Ramon, CA., Sandi Bates of Land O Lakes, WI.

Darrel is preceded in death by his parents; brother Donald and infant sister Nancy Jo.

Chaplain Cindy Johnson will officiate at funeral services for Darrel: 2 PM; Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at the Olson Funeral Chapel in Rush City. A time of visitation and reviewal is planned for 1 hour prior to the service. Music will be provided by Kelly Rogstad. Casket bearers include

Rick Johnson, Dennis Johnson, Jerry Caroon, Greg Twingstrom, Randy Johnson and Mike Just with the interment in the First Lutheran Cemetery, Rush City. A funeral luncheon will be held at the Rush City Community Center after the burial.

Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
