Dennis David Long

January 11, 1941 — May 29, 2018

Dennis Long passed away peacefully in the presence of his family Tuesday, May 29, 2018 after a very lengthy battle with many chronic illnesses at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 77.

Dennis David was born on January 11, 1941 to Joseph and Pearl (Reeser) Long in Wells, Minnesota.  He was the eighth child in a family of nine.  In 1958, Dennis graduated from Pine City High School and entered the US Navy that same year.  He served in the Philippines for 2 ½ years.  Upon returning home he met the love of his life, Loie Ann Linnell in the fall of 1962 at the Pine City Bowling Alley.  They were married on January 30, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in Pine City, Minnesota and blessed with 2 children, Dawn Denise and David Dennis.

Den worked at Spancrete on high steel before accepting a position with Univac (Unisys) in Eagan, Minnesota.  At Univac he worked as an Engineer Specialist, Sr. for 33 years and most of that time was on Department of Defense Contracts in Applied Research.  Prior to his retirement he worked at Factory Systems Engineering in Oakdale, Minnesota for 3 years as a Prototyping Specialist.   Dennis was very proud of the United States Patents he held.

In 1970, Den and Loie returned to Pine City.  Both enjoying the country life they bought their first farm.  They took great pride in their farm which grew from 53 to 300 acres.  Dennis loved working the land; together they raised Holstein steers and cash crops.

Den was an avid card player and also enjoyed watching football and reading. He loved spending time with family and close friends.  He had a working machine shop and could fashion any necessary part or trouble shoot any machining challenge.  He also created many beautiful pieces of wood furniture.  Together he and Loie enjoyed several travel adventures.

Dennis will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind; he is survived by his loving wife Loie; daughter Dawn and her husband John; son David and his wife Jody all of Pine City; grandchildren: Paul and Ashley (Tubbs) Mead, Benjamin and Amanda (Klein) Mead, Cassandra and Richard Jarvis, Lester and Sami (Spencer) Mead, Brianna and Joshua Gilson, Donovan Mead, Annabelle Mead, Arianna Mead, Briana Long, Nicholas Long, Megan Long and Matthew Long; great-grandchildren: John Mead, Matthew Mead, Levi Mead, Aubrey Mead, Calista Mead, Natalie Mead, Stephanie Jarvis, Loie Jarvis, Terra Jarvis, Olivia Jarvis and Emma Mead; siblings Jack Long of Pine City, Dale (LaVerne) Long of Anoka and Deloris (Wally) Jewel of Mora; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Pearl Long; brothers: Erv (Grace) Long, Frank (Millie) Long and Dewayne (Patsy) Long; sisters Lucinda (Marv) Nelson and Geraldine Bolton; and sister-in-law Colleen Long.
