Dorothy C. Carlson passed from this world Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Lakeside Health & Rehab in Pine City at the age of 99.
Dorothy Catherine Jackson was born February 24, 1921 to George and Jennie (Pritz) Jackson at the Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. Her mother died when Dorothy was 7 days old. When she was just 9 days old her father and grandmother Jackson brought her by train to Pine City. She grew up on the Jackson family farm located just south of Pokegama Lake. She was a member of the Pokegama Grange. Dorothy attended grade school and attended Pine City High School for two years.
After high school Dorothy worked clerking for Becker & Brechtel’s Variety & Grocery store on Main Street in Pine City. It was at that store that she first met Hans Bartheidel. They were married in Mora on September 15, 1946, making their home in the Meadowlawn area. To this union 3 children were born; Dale, Donald and Diane. In 1958, farming was not profitable and the farm was sold. The family moved to house on Cross Lake. Dorothy was a stay at home mom until Hans became ill and she returned to work; clerking at the Ben Franklin Store, maintaining the laundry mat and doing several house cleaning jobs.
Hans passed away in 1974. They had been married for 28 years. Dorothy now widowed continued to work for over 10 years. Dorothy met Erick Carlson, they enjoyed each other’s company and with the blessing of their children were married October 19, 1985. They continued to live in the Cross Lake house until Erick’s childhood home was on the market, they sold the house and moved to Rock Creek. Together they enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. They also cared for Dorothy’s father allowing him to remain at his home until his death at the age of 96.
Dorothy and Erick were married 23 years when he passed in 2008. She moved to Hillside Court until 2017 when a broken hip prevented her from living alone. She resided at Lakeside Health & Rehab until her death.
Over the years Dorothy enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for family gatherings and holidays. She loved to read and correspond with family and friends, faithfully writing to her pen pal Nancy Wheeler in England for 67 years. She spent many happy hours scrapbooking and documenting family and local history. During Dorothy’s life, she crossed paths with many people whose lives were enriched by knowing her. May Dorothy rest in peace joining those who have gone before her.
