George Leo Curwick

April 20, 1928 — October 4, 2025

Rush City

It is with great sadness that our family announces that George Leo (Bud) Curwick passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, October 4, 2025, at his home at the age of 97 years.

Bud was born April 20, 1928 to Reno and Louise (Baert) Curwick in Lyon County near Marshall, MN. He was the second child, the first-born son, with five other siblings to follow.

Bud attended school through the eighth grade and then went to work at an egg processing plant, to earn an income to help his mother care for his siblings.

Bud joined the United States Navy towards the end of World War II. After Basic Training in Chicago, IL he was assigned to a Naval Air Station in Texas. While on a weekend pass, Bud met the love of his life, Dorothy Eunice Sandling, at the local fairgrounds. Within six months, and despite their young ages, 15 and 17, both the bride and groom's mothers approved of their marriage. Bud's term of service lasted until July of 1946 when the young couple moved back to MN.

Some of Bud's uncles encouraged him to try bricklaying for an occupation. He enjoyed his trade and at times traveled to the Dakota's and the Twin Cities to seek work to provide for his growing family. In February 1947, the first child was born in Marshall. Soon after, they moved to Ghent, MN and seven more children were added to the nest. Bud had been commuting to the Twin Cities for work during the week and then began building a bigger house in the evenings. In June of 1959, Bud and Dorothy moved the family to North St. Paul, eventually adding four more kids to the nest. In the early 70's, Bud and sons built another home in Webster, WI and the family relocated. Bud then became a master stone mason, creating stone chimneys and entrance monuments for resorts and developments. He was always helping others with housing projects. He has been a loyal bricklayer union member just short of 75 years.

Dad's legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us about Jesus' love for us and to do what we could to help feed and care for the needy. He would remind us often to "Trust God", and to "Call it all joy", when we stressed about life's struggles.

After retiring in the early 90's, Bud and Dorothy wintered in Rio Grande City where they worked with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Monastery and had their "Little Quilt Factory" putting together over 1,000 quilts to give to the poor in the area. They only stopped during the Covid shutdown when they could no longer make the trip. Their final home was with son Joe and wife Brenda in Rush City, MN.

Bud was dearly loved by his wife Dorothy of 78 years, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

He is survived by children Shirley (Bill) Wald of St. Paul, Judy (John) Digaetano of White Bear Lake, Patricia Curwick of Rush City, Richard (Vicki) Curwick of Liberty Hill, TX, Rita (Steve) Moynagh of Stacy, Joseph (Brenda) Curwick of Rush City, David (Debbie) Curwick of Anacortes, WA, Thomas (Renee) Curwick of Lino Lakes, Caroline (Ken) Kirchberg of Rush City, Mark (Barb) Curwick of Maple Grove, Jane (Chuck) Borg of Webster, WI; 48 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great grandchildren; brothers James Curwick, Gene (Barb) Curwick; sister Rosemary Bakke; many nieces, nephews and cousins; other relatives and friends.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents Reno and Louise Curwick; wife Dorothy Curwick; daughter Laura Ann Leary; grandchildren James Robert Digaetano, Danielle Osborne, Sarah Curwick, Kimberly Curwick, Jordan Hubbard; brother Donald (Gloria) Curwick; sisters Donna (Tom) Thomas, Doris (Don) Lawson; in-laws Winnie Curwick, Gene Bakke; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
