Lawrence "Larry" Joachim Sobiech

August 17, 1937 — April 29, 2022

Larry Sobiech of Harris passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Friday evening, April 29, 2022, at his home at the age of 84.

Lawrence Joachim Sobiech was born August 17, 1937 to Thomas and Mathilda (Gekalla) Sobiech in "Gary New Duluth", Minnesota.  He was one of four boys.  Larry attended parochial schools in Duluth and enjoyed downhill skiing and ski jumping. He was a self-taught carpenter and read many books to improve his trade.

He married Joanne Antonich of Duluth in 1956 and had a son, Donald before moving to California. In California he built his first home and had two more sons, David and Daniel. The family moved back to Rosemount, MN and had one more son, Thomas. Larry became a master carpenter and started his own business, Able Construction. Over the years he built many homes, including 9 for his growing family. The first he built in California in 1961 and his last was in Harris in 2000.

Larry married Joan Daml, the love of his life, in 1986. The couple lived in St. Francis for 10 years until her death.

Larry enjoyed taking his boys fishing when they were younger. He also enjoyed two-step country dancing at the Fridley VFW, downhill skiing at Wild Mountain, Lutsen or Telemark and on any given day he could be found on the golf course, cross country trails, riding his motorcycle, or in his garden. Larry grew enough vegetables that he was able to donate to the local food pantry or his church.

A self proclaimed "Vagabond" Larry lived in many locations throughout his life; including San Jose' California, Rosemount, Northfield, Faribault, St. Francis and Harris. He was lucky to have three great friends in his life; Mary Sharp and Scott and Terri Berg.

Mary and Larry enjoyed singing and dancing together for over 16 years. There were a couple bands they liked a lot and would follow them to different locations, like groupies!! Larry loved to sing Marty Robbins and Merle Haggard, he had a wonderful voice.

Scott and Terri are Larry’s neighbors; they enjoyed each others company and watched over him as he got older and helped him with some of the chores around the yard. Larry even loved to share his yard with their horses so they would have a new place to roam and graze, he would often share some of his vegetables or apples with the horses.

Larry loved his church; First Lutheran Church of Harris. Sunday mornings he greeted those attending and sang in the Praise Choir. We even heard he liked to make jokes with the Vicar!

Larry is survived by his sons Donald (Leslie) Sobiech of Winsted, David (Trina) Sobiech of Brown Deer, WI, Thomas (Missy) Sobiech of Boyd, WI; best friend Mary Sharp of Fridley; granddaughters Heather Hobbs, Naomi Sobiech, Tyana Casmer, Mandi DeVries, Renee Vaughan, Rebecca Sobiech, Nikki Martinez, Alesha Sobiech; great-grandchildren Alexis Bessermin, Kyla Bessermin, Ciara Bessermin, Avery DeVries, Evelynn DeVries, Nehemiah Martinez, Neziah Martinez, Nina Martinez; sisters-in-law Allie Sobiech of St. Cloud, Bernice Sobiech of Duluth, Helen Sobiech of Center City; many nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Mathilda Sobiech; son Danny; wife Joanie; brothers Ed Sobiech, Eugene Sobiech, Louis Sobiech.
