Obituary

Mark was born to Peter and Mary (Rootkie) Osterdyk in Rush City, Minnesota. At the age of six his father passed away unexpectedly. His mother later married Otto Jacobson, the man who would help Mary raise and care for him, his brother Kelly and sisters Judy and Susie. Mark spent his entire childhood living in Pine City on Woodpecker Ridge. It was a ‘Norman Rockwell’ time in America where he lived for baseball games, boy scouts, paper routes, outdoor hockey rinks and riding his bike wherever the day would lead. “Just be home for supper!"

Mark was very involved in high school and loved participating in band, athletics and playing in several rock and roll bands. He worked at the Mobil gas station and drove a ‘57 Chevy. It was at Pine City High School that he met his future wife and life long companion, Sue Youngbauer.

Mark and Sue were married on December 30th, 1972 during a famous ice storm that caused widespread power outages and ice covered roads all across Minnesota. Together they began the beautiful journey of raising their three daughters, Heidi, Amy and Jayme; a red head, a blonde and a brunette. They brought up their family with sturdy virtue and a living faith in God. Mark and Sue were blessed with eight grandchildren. Mark’s playful spirit and deep love for his children and grandchildren will always be a special legacy.

In 1975 Mark began his painting and drywall business. He loved serving his customers for over fifty years. He was very proud of the many projects he worked on and especially loved all the people he could help. In 1975, Mark and Sue also bought an 80 acre abandoned farm on Brunswick Road in Pine City. That started their fifty year labor of love: restoring, remodeling and renovating their beautiful farm.

Mark had a hand in so many lives, sharing by example his values of faith, hard work, and having fun. He was known for cranking up the music and taking his kids and nieces and nephews boating, waterskiing, camping, hunting, snowmobiling and four-wheeling.

Mark had a deep passion for music and was a talented, self-taught bass player. He shared this gift for many years with several bands at his church. He also loved playing the stand up bass with the local blue grass band. It was such a special, fun time having the jam sessions in his garage every month.

Another passion for Mark was riding motorcycles. He purchased his first motorcycle before he even had a driver’s license. There was not a time in his life where there wasn’t a motorcycle in the garage. He especially enjoyed the weekly motorcycle rides with his “Old Guys Rule” motorcycle buddies.

Even though Mark officially retired in 2025 he continued helping others with projects, farming, riding his Spyder motorcycle, making music and spending quality time with friends and family. In November of 2025, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In the weeks before his passing he became “Homesick for Heaven.” On May 13th, 2026, his Lord and Savior called him to his eternal home.

Mark is survived by his wife, Susan Osterdyk of Pine City; children Heidi (Brian) Deutschlander of Pine City, Amy (Adam) Grahek of Scandia, Jayme (Kyle) Meyer of Blaine; grandchildren Makayla and Mitchel Thompson, Brooke, Connor, and Brianna Grahek, Ally and Kacey Meyer; siblings Kelly (Cheryl) Osterdyk of Pine City, Susie (Chris) Matzer of Isanti; in-laws Mike (Sheila) Youngbauer of Rush City, Pat Youngbauer of Sturgis, South Dakota, Marty (Jaime) Youngbauer of Rush City, Dave (Chris) Henschel of Laporte, Robin (Scott) Wimmer of Pine City, Matt (Jessica) Youngbauer of Bemidji; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Jacobson and Pete Osterdyk; step-father Otto Jacobson; sister Judy Brand; grandson Bo Mark Meyer; sister-in-law Sharon Henschel; nephew Josh Vesely; in-laws Jim and Lois Youngbauer.

Mark’s funeral will be held at 11 A.M.; Monday, June 1st, with a time for reviewal and visitation one hour prior to the service. There will also be a time of visitation held Sunday evening, May 31st, from 5-7 P.M. All will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Pine City. Interment will take place at Johnson Cemetery in Royalton Township.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service of Pine City - Swanson Chapel.
