Phyllis Schlagel, age 82 passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Phyllis Ann (Haberman) Schlagel was born on August 14, 1941, in Pine City, Minnesota, to George and Ann (Smetana) Haberman.
Phyllis graduated from Pine City High School in 1959. After high school, she pursued higher education earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from The College of St. Scholastica. While there, she dedicated her life to God, becoming a Benedictine Nun. In later years she acquired an MBA from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Phyllis married Robert Schlagel on June 16, 1973 in Beroun. Together they raised their children in Marshall, Minnesota. Phyllis was a devoted mother to their three children: Catherine, Julie, and Robert.
Her professional life was marked by a passionate commitment to education. Phyllis applied her trade as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, serving in both public and Catholic educational institutions. Her dedication to the church and Catholic education was unwavering, and she actively participated in her parish community, advocating for the importance of Catholic education.
Phyllis’s legacy extends to her treasured grandchildren who affectionately called her "Grandma." She also had the joy of being a great-grandmother to Paysen, who brought an extra sparkle to her later years.
Phyllis was a woman of remarkable strength, grace, and humility. Her faith, cultivated during her time at the convent, remained a guiding force throughout her life. She was a beacon of light to her family and friends, always offering a listening ear, wise counsel, and unconditional love.
Phyllis Ann Schlagel’s life was a testament to love, faith, and family. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Phyllis is survived by her loving children Catherine Schlagel (Charles Freiss), Julie Schlagel (James Norman), Robert (Kathryn) Schlagel; her cherished grandchildren Parker (Vicky) Freiss, Adeline Schlagel, Thor Norman; great-grandchild Paysen; her dear sister Agnes Otterstetter; and her sister-in-law Marita Haberman. Phyllis also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her cherished Sisters from St. Scholastica Monastery.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Ann Haberman; husband Robert Schlagel; grandson Robert Schlagel; and brother George Haberman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Phyllis at 11:00 AM; Friday (6/21) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pine City, with a time for visitation one hour prior to the service at Swanson Funeral Chapel. There will also be a time of visitation for family and friends from 5:00-8:00 PM; Thursday (6/20) with the praying of the rosary at 7:30 PM, at the Swanson Funeral Chapel of Pine City. The interment will take place in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Beroun.
