It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Robert “Bob” Paul Sunnarborg, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He peacefully passed away at home in Rush City on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 79.
Bob’s life was a testament to his strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his family. He was born on November 11, 1945 in Duluth, Minnesota to Eino and Aune Mary (Mannisto) Sunnarborg, the youngest of three brothers. His early years were spent in Duluth before the family moved to Minneapolis and then Columbia Heights, where he graduated from Columbia Heights High School in 1963.
Bob’s life was marked by significant achievements and deep personal connections. He served his country with honor in the United States Navy Seabees, bravely contributing his skills during the Vietnam War. His commitment to lifelong learning is evidenced by his graduation from Dunwoody Institute in 1967, which launched a successful career as a mechanical draftsman. He ultimately retired from Whirlpool Corporation in December 2000 as a Senior Product Designer, a testament to his talent and work.
His personal life was equally rich. He married Shelly Bjorkland in 1969, and they welcomed two children, Kirk and Pamela. He later married Connie (Peden) Sunnarborg on July 10, 1982 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Together they shared many years of happiness in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, and St. Joesph, Michigan, before returning to Minnesota after his retirement in 2002.
Bob’s legacy extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. He was a remarkably skilled craftsman, able to build and fix virtually anything. He joyfully applied his talents to home remodeling projects, even designing and assisting in the construction of a house. His passion for genealogy led him to spend countless hours meticulously tracing his Finnish heritage. This dedication reflected the depth of his love for his family and his appreciation for his roots.
Bob leaves behind a loving family: his children, Kirk Sunnarborg, Pamela (Bill) Lemus, Shawn (Shannon) Sunnarborg, and Jason Sunnarborg; his cherished grandchildren, Chelsea, Tyler, Jordan, Nikolas, Amy and Emily Sunnarborg including Kaetlin Pearson and great-grandchildren Penny Pearson and Beckham Shilt. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
