Bill McQuillan of Pine City passed away Friday, October 18, 2019 at Lakeside Health & Rehab Center in Pine City at the age of 83.
William Michael McQuillan was born October 20, 1935 to Edwin and Vivian (Chandler) McQuillan in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Born and raised in St. Paul, Bill attended St. Paul Central and went on to Macalester College to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. Before starting his career he spent a season skiing in Colorado and Utah. He then went on an Amazon adventure with friends Bob Roe and Rudy Thurau to film 3 Men and a Raft, which was later featured on TV and in magazines.
Back in the US Bill married Mary Haugen and started his long social work career in Duluth, then on to Director in Lac Qui Parle, Chisago, Pine and Mile Lacs County. Home was Pine City where he raised two children and served in the community. Bill donated time, talent and treasure to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Luther Point Camp, Lions (Melvin Jones Award), Boy Scouts and Pine City planning commission. After retiring Bill’s dream became a reality to own a sailboat and venture to Lake Superior to race his sailboat with son and crew who fondly referred to him as “Father Bill”. In later years Bill enjoyed morning coffee every day with his local friends with the aid of Arrowhead bus.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Mary McQuillan; son John (Mindy) McQuillan; daughter Christine (Jay) Munsie; grandson Kevin Munsie; other relatives and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Vivian McQuillan; sister Marlene.
Funeral services for Bill: 11 AM; Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pine City. A gathering of family and friends is planned from 5-7 PM; Friday (10/25/19) at the Swanson Funeral Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at the church. The interment will take place at Hilltop Cemetery in Pine City.
